Verdicchio

A White-wine grape grown mainly in Italy’s MARCHE region where it’s been cultivated since the fourteenth century.

Verdicchio’s name is derived from verde (meaning green). Referring to the yellow-green skin of the grape, which gives the wine a subtle greenish hue. The wines are generally CRISP and DRY, with a light but elegant aroma and flavor.

The best known of the Verdicchio wines come from the DOC of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, which can include small amounts of TREBBIANO and MALVASIA. Part of the notability of these wines traditionally sold in a green, amphora-shaped bottle. In style it can range from light and fresh to surprisingly full, rich and complex, and the subtle nuances of fennel and other herbs make it an ideal partner for white fish.

The wines from the DOC of Verdicchio dei Matelica are not as well known as those from Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi but are thought by many to be as good or better because they’re more full bodied and have better aging potential. The high ACID level of the Verdicchio grape makes it a good candidate for SPARKLING WINES. And the SPUMANTE made from this variety receives good reviews. Verdicchio is also known as Marchigiano and Verdone.

Montepulciano

A Red-wine grape widely cultivated throughout Italy, with the most concentrated plantings in the southeastern regions from the MARCHE down to APULIA (Puglia in Italian, is the wine region lying in the “heel” of Italy’s boot-shaped land mass).

Some argue that Montepulciano originated in the ABRUZZI region, with which it’s still most closely associated, mainly because of the DOC wines of MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUSSO.

On the leg of Italy, Abruzzo is behind the knee, a region of mountains sliding down through hills to the sea. Whilst most Italian vinegrowers seem to believe that fragmentation in DOC system generally leads to higher prices, here they have gone for simplicity and, until recently, there were only two: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC for the red wines, and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC for the white.

This grape variety is capable of creating deeply colored, rich red wines with blackberry fruit flavors and SPICY, PEPPERY qualities. Because of its moderate ACID levels, Montepulciano generally produces wines that are smooth and MELLOW, but sometimes TANNIC enough to be AGED.

This variety is also made into a cherry-pink ROSE called CERASUOLO. Other red wines based on Montepulciano grapes (but usually blended with local grapes) include the ROSSO CONERO DOC wines from the Marches region and the DOC wines of CERVETERI and VELLETRI from the LATIUM region.

Montepulciano is also known as Cordisco, Morellone, Primaticcio, and Uva Abruzzi.

(Note: the Montepulciano grape variety grown in Abruzzo should not be confused with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano, which produces wine from the Sangiovese variety.)
